The Sims 3: Cheat Codes and How to Use Them

How to Use Cheat Codes

While playing, or at the Main Menu, hold down [ctrl] + [shift] + [C] on your keyboard to open the Console. The Console looks like a light blue bar at the top of your screen, and while it is open the rest of your screen will look a little darker, too. Check out the picture below to see what it looks like with your Console open (click on the picture to see a larger version). Type TestingCheatsEnabled On into the text box Console, and then hit [Enter]. Now you can begin using your cheat codes. Simply open the Console again, type in your cheat code, then hit enter. You will need to type this in before ANY cheat codes will work, so do this first!

Also, when this list of cheats shows something in square brackets [ ] do not type the brackets into the console. They are there to tell you that you need to enter a specific thing. For instance, one of the cheats below says UnlockOutfits [on or off], what you want to do is..

Type this to turn the cheat on: UnlockOutfits on

Type this to turn it off: UnlockOutfits off

Notes:
  • You do not need to capitalize any of the letters in these cheats. Certain letters are capitalized to make the separate words in the cheats easier to read, and therefor easier to type.
  • Anywhere that it says On or Off you can also use True or False instead, and vice versa.
  • You will know the cheat worked if the Console bar disappears after you type it in and hit Enter. You will need to open the Console every time you want to type in any cheat.
  • You do not need to pause your game before using the Console. It will pause the game for you when you open it.
  • To exit the Console at any time simply hit the [Esc] key on your keyboard.

Cheat Codes and Tips

Help - Displays some cheats in the console, but not all of them.

Money Cheats

Here is the FamilyFunds cheat with a short example of how to use it, and a few other money cheats as well.

FamilyFunds [Family or Sim's name] [Simoleons] - Set your Sim's household funds to anything you like up to 99, 999, 999 Simoleons. That's a lot of money! This cheat is much easier than using the Motherlode cheat over and over if you want more than 50,000 Simoleons.

You will need to use the name that represents your Sim's current residential lot. For instance, Summer Lane lives with her Sim friends all on the same lot. But since she bought the lot, it is named after her last name. This residence is called the Lane residence. You can find out your actual residence name by zooming out to Map View [M] and hovering your mouse pointer over the green house bubble over your Sim's residence. See the picture below.

So for this cheat I would type this into the Console: FamilyFunds Lane 50000000

Kaching -  Add 1,000 more Simoleons to your Sim's household.

Motherlode - Add 50,000 more Simoleons to your Sim's household.

Lifestyle Cheats

FreeRealEstate - Buy a house or lot for free!

UnlockOutfits [on or off] - View career outfits and service uniforms (Must be enabled before entering Create-A-Sim mode)

Build/Buy Cheats

BuyDebug - Opens hidden and rare items you can buy in Build/Buy mode. To find them after using this cheat, go into Buy Mode (not Build Mode, as this won't show up there). After typing in the BuyDebug cheat a new tab with a ? will open up. Click this tab (hovering over it will say Debug) and, depending on which expansions you have or don't have, it will show you several new tabs on the right.

Currently available tabs when you have all expansions are: Tomb Objects, Underwater Objects, Fish Spawners, Gardening Plants & Seed Spawners, Rock/Gem/Metal Spawners, Insect Spawners, and Misc. Objects.

As you can see, the Debug tab has spawners for things such as seeds and rocks. Place those on your Sim's lot for a mass of butterflies in your yard, fish for your pond, or even to have random gems popping up.

Debug also has plenty of other fun objects that you may have always wanted to use but could never find. That's where you can find mail boxes, tomb stones, quest reward items, items you can normally only buy from shops or markets and won't find in Build/Buy Mode, and even all of the different types of lawn gnomes!

MoveObjects [on or off] - No limitations for placing/moving objects

ResetSim [first name] [last name] - Return Sims to safe and neutral state at home

ConstrainFloorElevation [true or false] - Force terrain adjustments regardless of objects, Sims, and other structures

DisableSnappingToSlotsOnAlt [on or off] Objects will not snap to slots while holding [Alt]

FadeObjects [on or off] Objects fade when camera gets close to them

SnapObjectsToAngle [true or false] - Toggle 45 degree angle object snap

SnapObjectsToGrid [true or false] - Toggle snap to grid for placed objects

To place more than one shop object on your lot at a time without having to reselect it  - Hold down your Shift key while you select the item in the Build/Buy shop and place your item on the lot. It will help you "stamp" as many of that item as you want without having to reselect the item.

Mail Box Cheats
To use mail box cheats, hold down the [Ctrl] and [Shift] keys and click on the mail box of your Sim's lot at the same time. As a side note, I'm pretty sure the one that says "Object..." is a part of Twallan's Master Controller. Please correct me if I'm wrong and it appears normally in the game.

A menu will pop up with the following list of choices:
  • Make All Happy - Makes your entire Sim household happy
  • Make Friends For Me - Your currently selected Sim will make random friends
  • Make Me Know Everyone - Your currently selected Sim will now know everyone in town
  • Force NPC... - A large list of NPCs will pop up and you can choose which one you want to visit you. Everything from Babysitter, to Firefighter, to whatever else your game and expansion packs will allow
  • Set Career... - Set your Sim's career from those available
  • Make Needs Static - Tired of your Sims having to pee, sleep, and eat all of the time? This will turn all of that off. Open this menu again and click on Make Needs Dynamic to change it back to normal
  • Force Visitor - A random Sim will come visit your household
  • Supernatural Population Control - Add or remove Supernatural Sims from the world

Late Night Cheats

UnlockOutfits [on or off] - Unlocks vampire teeth in CAS mode. You can find them in CAS "Accessories".

RestrictBuildBuyInBuildings [on or off] - Removes "Homeowner's Association" restrictions in Build/Buy mode.

[L] hotkey - Opens your Sim's celebrity journal.

How to make your Sim a celebrity super fast - Have your Sim start talking to a celebrity.

World Adventures Cheats

Ancient Coins - Get more ancient coins without doing any adventuring! Use the buydebug cheat. Go into Debug (the ? tab) in Build/Buy, then go to Tomb Objects. The first item at the top is Ancient Coins Pile. Select the coins and place them on your home lot and you're good to go! If you want to place many coins at once just hold down your Shift key while placing them. This will keep you from having to click the item over and over in the shop.

Get one or more of The Sultan's Tabernacle circle tents on your lot - This one is sort of cheaty, but without mods will require some actual gameplay first. First use the Ancient Coins cheat trick shown above until your Sim has collected 2,500 Ancient Coins for their household.

Now you need to buy The Sultan's Tabernacle. Either your Sim will need to adventure enough to gain a level 3 Visa to buy it from the Special Merchant, or if you have a mod installed to skip that. Search around Sims 3 mod sites and you will find some that can do this.

Once you have bought The Sultan's Tabernacle, place it on your Sim's lot. Next go into Edit Town, evict the Sims on the lot, then go into Build/Buy mode for the lot. Now you can use the tear dropper tool on the tent. Copy and paste as many of the tents as you wish on the lot. Then simply go back to Edit Town mode, put your Sims back onto the lot, and save!

Generations Cheats

MovieMakerCheatsenabled [on or off] - Be sure testingcheatsenabled is on, then type this cheat in as well. Now hold down the [SHIFT] key and left click on any Sim. It will bring up a whole new menu with lots of options you can use to pose and move your Sims for recording videos. This cheat is very useful for those who want to try their hand at machinima.

Island Paradise Cheats

DiscoverAllUnchartedIslands - It does exactly what it says; it unlocks all uncharted islands, immediately removing the grey misty clouds covering them. This one is great if you're tired of swimming around them hopelessly, or asking every Sim on the islands about it.

Other Cheats, Hotkeys and Tricks

HideHeadlineEffects [on or off] - Show talk/thought balloons above Sim's head

JokePlease - Print random joke to console

EnableLlamas [on or off] Llamas enabled message

FPS [on or off] - Toggle framerate display at top right

FullScreen [on or off] Full screen

[Q] hotkey or type "quit" into Console Quit the game

To move pictures/paintings on your Sim's wall up or down - Click on a picture on your Sim's wall, hold down the left mouse button and drag up or down with your mouse.

To give your Sims unlimited Lifetime Happiness reward points - Go to the Main Menu. Open the Console while there and type TestingCheatsEnabled On - This cheat will only work if you type this in while you're in the MAIN MENU. Now load your favorite town and click on the Sim you wish to give more Lifetime Happiness reward points. Click on the Lifetime Happiness tab, then begin clicking in the area just to the right of the little treasure box icon. If it doesn't work on the first click, keep clicking around in different spots until you find the right one. If you followed this correctly, your Sim's Lifetime Happiness points should go up with every click.

To remove your Sim's moodlets - So your Sim is feeling happy, or crappy, or whatever, and you don't want them to. Hold down your [CTRL] key and click on the moodlet you don't want. It will disappear!

To kill a Sim super fast! - Select the Sim you want to die a horrible and quick death. Click on their Needs tab. Click in the "Hunger" meter bar and drag it all the way to the left. Be sure testingcheatsenabled is on or this won't work! Now that the Hunger meter is empty, your Sim will die instantly of starvation. This is the fastest method I have found to kill a Sim, and will only work for Sims in the family you are currently playing.

Click on the Options Menu (or hit the F5 key) and then Options... for all kinds of tweaks you may not have noticed before, not just graphics and sound tweaks. Depending on what expansion packs you have, you can set things like allowing your Sim household to have celebrities or not, changing what types of weather are allowed in your town, how long your Sims' lives will be (in Sim days), and even whether your Sims age at all. If you haven't looked there yet it's definitely worth browsing through.
